The Review - AT THE MOVIES with DAN CARRIER
Published: 22 January 2009

Also on release this week

Valkyrie
TOM Cruise takes the role as the leading Nazi Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg who decides late on in the war that Hitler is actually bad news and, as a loyal German officer, he must kill him.
Based on the true story of how Hitler narrowly avoided an assassination attempt by senior military figures, this crisply told tale includes a bevy of English talent.
Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard all don uniforms.

Rachel Getting Married
IN what world do the people who continually churn out these films about wedding days inhabit?
Why do they peddle these flicks every other week of the year?
This time round we have Kym (Anne Hathaway) as a bad’un coming out of 10 years of rehab to be at her sister’s joyous occasion.
She is the fly in the ointment, so to speak, who likes to make a scene and therefore has the capacity to get in the way on this day to end all days.
It is meant to be a knees-up of immensely soppy proportions but poor Kym always seems to out her foot in it. It is a quirky family drama but I can’t help but think all this nonsense about it being the most important day of your life, yada yada, is navel-gazing twaddle, and therefore this film must sink into said “navel gazing twaddle” category.
Either that, or I must be missing something.
Stop it now.
