• IT was one of the highlights of the London Film Festival and the Jewish Film Festival. Now, Waltz With Bashir, the animated documentary about the experiences of Israeli conscripts in the 1982 Lebanese war, is on general release. Film-maker Ari Forman revisited the torrid time he and his unit had, and has created an original and interesting must-see anti-war polemic.

• IN perhaps the most bizarre release of the year, Choke tells the story of Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell), a sex addict who has an original scam: he pretends to choke in posh restaurants and then befriends and scams his rescuers to help pay for the care of his mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
When he is told a stem cell experiment might help rejuvenate his old dear’s brain, he is sent off to discover his real parentage.

• GREAT name, great voice: ’Tis Autumn: The search for Jackie Paris is a documentary that tells the life story of a jazz singer you’ve never heard of. Indulgently shot and rammed full of interviews with friends, family and the man himself, it will make you oddly nostalgic for a New York you never knew.

• DOING what it says on the tin, Blindness is an apocalyptic horror that substitutes the usual flesh-eating zombie stuff for a disease that turns people blind. Civilisation quickly breaks down as more and more succumb and it is a survival of the strongest who horde food and attack the weak. But one person is unaffected, and is able to lead a small gang of the stricken to safety.
