Chepik’s L’Ange de Notre Dame
Artist a long way from home

SERGEI Chepik is an artist with surprising – and contrasting – passions. Paris is one, Venice another, both a long way from his Russian homeland. But more captivating is the combination of religion and bullfighting.
You might argue that the last two are equally life and death subjects, though dramatically different. But they are an inspiration for Sergei Chepik now on view at Hampstead’s Catto Gallery. And what of Russia? “Have I betrayed my native country to embrace western Latin culture – Paris, Venice, Arles?” he asks himself. “Of course no. My drawings of Mihail Bulhakov’s novel, The White Guard, commissioned in 2006 are also shown in this exhibition in the form of lithographs.”

* Catto Gallery, 10 Heath Street, NW3, until July 17, 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, 2.30pm to 6pm Sunday.
