David Schneuer’s ‘Cocktail party’ |
Observations on life
in Tel Aviv
THE balcony of his top floor flat overlooking Tel Aviv was the favourite vantage point from which the renowned German/Israeli artist David Schneuer watched life below. He always claimed he painted for pleasure and enjoyed observing life that way.
And so it was that Schneuer, who died in 1987, had his own eyeful, for example, of scantily clad voluptuous women with well-dressed men prowling in search of their favours, pictures that earned him international recognition.
Now an exhibition of 25 of Schneuer’s works not seen on the market before are among a collection of 40 going on show at the Catto Gallery in Heath Street, Hampstead.
These later works from the 1970s and 1980s still hark back to the slightly seedy milieu that attracted Schenuer to Tel Aviv, reminders of his time between the First and Second World Wars he knew best when he lived in Munich, Montparnasse and the bustling port of Haifa.
His style and figures in collage form seem heavily inspired by the work of the German Expressionist movement, Schneuer, admired too for his poster designs, taking great delight in observing humanity in the bustle of jostling crowds and, in particular, the female form.
“We are thrilled to have a further opportunity to show David Schneuer’s portrayal’s of life between the wars, which perfectly illustrate the mix of frivolity and seediness from this period,” says Catto Gallery owner Gillian Catto.
“We are sure collectors will warm to his sense of humour and style evident in these works.”
