The Review - AT THE MOVIES with WILLIAM HALL
Published: 13 December 2007

Pick of the Indies

SO much to see and so many dark nights to fill: it’s the best time of year to visit a picture house.
And this week, because it’s Christmas, I feel no shame in suggesting a musical.
Les Chansons D’Amour, on screen at the Curzon Soho, tells the story of Ismael and Julie, two young hip things who, after eight years together, want to spice things up. Enter Alice to form an enviably straightforward menage a trois.
But things are not always easy, and when disaster strikes Ismael has to have a long and uncomfortable look at life. All this is interspersed with the characters breaking into song. It’s odd but watchable.
And if you missed Sunday’s screening of In The Shadow Of The Moon, in aid of the Miriam Hyman Memorial Fund, no fear: the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn has a matinee screening on Thursday, December 20. Miriam was the 31-year-old Hampstead woman who died in the July 7 bombings, and the film was made by her friend Chris Riley.
Based on the Apollo missions to the moon, it features interviews with astronauts and some superb archive footage. A must for star gazers and space heads.
And more news on the screening of It’s A Wonderful Life on December 23. We’ve managed to persuade Cambridge lecturer Colin Shindler – who teaches a course on the films of Frank Capra and was a friend of the man himself – to host a Q&A session.
