Pick of the Indies
PAPER Clips is a low-budget documentary about a school project.
Whitwell is a rural community of around 2,000 people. The population is white and Christian, the local school having one Hispanic and five black pupils.
In 1998, the headteacher decided she wanted to teach the school about the Holocaust.
As the idea of the murder of six million people was discussed, one pupil said they had never seen six million of anything.
The Norwegian resistance in the war wore a paperclip in the lapel, as Jews were made to wear a yellow Star of David, as a sign that they would not give in to Nazi totalitarianism. A bright Whitwell pupil had the idea of collecting paperclips to represent the total number of Holocaust victims – and a school project was born.
The end result is a train wagon in the school’s grounds filled with 11 million paperclips, sent by the great and the good, by pen friends, and others who stumbled across the project on the internet.
The film is a testimony to the dedication of a small group of teachers using original ways to ensure the past is not forgotten.
