The Arrival by Graham Carrick
Paintings in the park

FINSBURY Park is a gem of an open space in north London’s sprawl and yet for years it was off limits to all but the most addicted personalities (drugs or al fresco sex).
But now it is firmly back on the A-Z as a place for all ages to go to restore their spirits without a hint of the dodgy and degrading.
And while you are there, make a point of going to the old toilet block in the centre of the park and see how it has been transformed into a wonderful art gallery space – the only one in the area. It is called gallery:space and is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers. Its new show, Salon Locale, features 20 artists, all living and working in the locality, and includes works in a wide range of media: painting, print, drawing, photography. Works are on sale for reasonable prices (about £500). This new and much-needed amenity in the area needs to be supported especially as the gallery is currently not funded by any of the three local councils which border on the park – Haringey, Hackney and Islington.

* Salon Locale at gallery:space in Finsbury Park runs until September 2, Tuesday – Sunday 12-6
