This fascinating film by Turkish director Nuri Ceylan is released this week at selected independent cinemas. It tells the story of the demise of a relationship.
Isa and Bahar are two lonely figures, unable to be together, but unable to live part. Their lives are so closely interlinked as to make it impossible for them to split up permanently, even though both know it is the only way for them to move forward and escape the unhappiness they both feel.

THE London Socialist Film Co-Op present Hejar, a controversial film about police brutality in Turkey which the Turkish police tried to ban, despite it being chosen as the country’s official entry for the Oscars.

It is a tale of a retired Turkish judge who is thrown into a moral dilemma when police officers kill his Kurdish neighbours: having sided with the Turkish authorities all his life, he is put in a dilemma when the only survivor, a five-year-old Kurdish girl, needs his help. Although they do not speak the same language, the judge begins to consider his attitude towards ethnic groups and wonder who, exactly, are the victims.
The screening is followed by a discussion by Desmond Fernandes, the author of ‘The Kurdish Genocide in Turkey’ and a lecturer at De Montford University.
