Area/Ward:

Haverstock

Haverstock, thought to derive from the land-owning Haverstocke family is a densely populated neighbourhood of many estates and in Victorian times was fairly impoverished. It was later particularly known for the manufacture of scientific instruments and pianos. Chalk Farm, comprising much of Haverstock ward, was owned by Eton College in the 15th Century. However long before that it was the site of shelters for travellers making their way up a bleak Haverstock Hill to Hampstead, so the name Chalk Farm derives from the Anglo-Saxon for ‘cold cottages’. These days it absorbs the spread from Camden Town and has many lively pubs, live music venues, and restaurants.
