Area/Ward:

Gospel Oak

Lying just south of Parliament Hill, Gospel Oak was once fields of watercress beds. The famous oak tree from which the area’s name derives stood here until the late 1800s and underneath it ceremonial Gospel readings were given to assembled parishioners. It evolved into a working class, residential neighbourhood, with much new social housing constructed after wartime bombing. Many famous names reside here, including actor and broadcaster Michael Palin and Government advisor Alistair Campbell. Of note are the unique modernist Isokon flats and the splendid late Victorian All Hallows Church by James Brook, celebrated for its impressive acoustics and often a venue for classical concerts.
