The Review > Area Guide

Area/Ward:

Frognal and Fitzjohns

Although there was a settlement here in medieval times this firmly residential tract of many grand houses was hugely developed during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The ward of Frognal and Fitzjohns sweeps upwards to the edge of Hampstead Heath, following the line of the thronged Finchley Road where many European refugees settled in the 1930s. One such immigrant was ground-breaking psychologist Sigmund Freud; the house where he lived, worked and died is now the Freud Museum and he is honoured with a nearby statue. The area is also home to the community-focused Camden Arts Centre playing an essential role in showcasing contemporary arts in Camden.
