Area/Ward:

Fortune Green

Despite being now a quiet residential area, Fortune Green was not always so. Shoot Up Hill was a notorious robbers’ haunt in the 12th Century and it was considered unsafe to travel through. In Victorian times the Green was a gathering place where laundresses washed clothes, people played cricket, quoits and trapball and gypsies camped. Now Fortune Green is the location of Hampstead Cemetery, an important area for nature conservation and where the father of antiseptic medicine, Joseph Lister, is buried. It has some bizarre tombs and monuments, and two gothic-style listed chapels.
