Area/Ward:

Belsize

Taking its name from Bel Assis, meaning 'beautifully situated', Belsize Park shares not just neighbouring Hampstead's postcode, but its village atmosphere too. It was long the site of an aristocratic mansion dating back to the early 16th Century. Used as a pleasure grounds, it was notorious for its colourful entertainment and was eventually demolished. Soon afterwards in the 1850s, the area took shape as it is now, with its pleasing streets of attractive houses and finally became known as Belsize Park. It centres around Haverstock Hill, England's Lane and Belsize Village which have appealing parades of independent shops and cafes.
