REVIEW - SIGUR ROS
Hammersmith Apollo

I HAD my first stab at grown-up music last week, but was left feeling five years old by the end of the night.
I was immediately made to feel out of place at arty Icelandic group Sigur Ros’s gig when I was told off by the rottweiler in front of me for talking – it’s a gig lady, not the fricking cinema!
There’s no denying the troupe perform their brand of whale music well – the massive Hammersmith Apollo was full to capacity with people who take life very seriously.
The pretentious whiff that surrounds this group hit me as I fidgeted in my seat. You can’t shorten their name to make them sound wacky and fun. They have an album that they didn’t even bother to name. They don’t “do” making money and won’t be involved in anything mainstream.
Let’s just say I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t the life and soul of a party if ya-know-whad-I-mean. Oh and two of their followers – Chris and Gwynnie – apparently stuck one of Sigur’s epic howling efforts on the record player as baby Apple was born.
I also came to realise I’m actually quite attached to lyrics after sitting through an evening of Icelandic. And I resented forking out £2 for a bag of nuts. Small. KP. Wrong.
The self-indulgent sounds of violin bow on guitar also rankled, while the evening was fittingly concluded by my grumpy bus driver shouting at me. As I dithered at my stop, he banged on the glass and yelled: “Get off the bus!”
Wandering home in the rain, I wished, self-pitying, that I’d never got on it.
