CAMDEN NEW JOURNAL CHALLENGE CUP FINAL

Globetown 2, Steeles 2
Globetown win 3-1
on penalties

KEEPER John Reid’s penalty saves clinched the trophy for Globetown after a thrill-a-minute final between these Camden Sunday League giants went right to the wire on Sunday.
Steve Hounslow scored the winner after Reid had saved twice from the spot to send Steeles crashing out in a heartbreaking, sudden-death shoot-out at Wingate and Finchley FC.
The boys from Belsize Park shrugged off the loss of hot-shot striker Jack McNicholl, who was injured in the warm-up, to take a 2-0 lead against Globetown.
Steve Isbell scored in either half after fine work from Eli Nathenson and as the hour approached, it looked as though the three-times Challenge Cup winners had secured number four.
But Globetown had other ideas and Laurence Easeman’s goal was breached on 61 minutes; Peter Walsh squeezing the ball home after Paul Dunne had pressurised the keeper.
Five minutes later, Darren Abbott sealed an impressive comeback with a 30-yard cross-cum-shot that looped over Easeman and into the net.
And Walsh and Dunne could have settled it but were denied by defender Leo Moynihan and Easeman to force extra time.
Yet even that was not enough to separate the sides despite a 25-yard howitzer from Dunne that hit the bar and clever run and shot by Steeles’ substitute Mark Riches that was palmed away by shoot-out hero Reid.
