LIVERPOOL VICTORIA COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

CAPTAIN Ben Hutton reached 47 as Middlesex County Cricket Club’s batsmen took the initiative in their opening match against Kent yesterday (Wednesday).
In response to Sunday’s six-wicket defeat to Gloucestershire in the C&G Trophy, where Middlesex were dismissed for 95, the skipper led his team to 160 for three as the New Journal went to press.
An opening partnership of 67 between Hutton and Ed Smith laid the foundation, with Smith hitting eight fours before falling for 36 in the 20th over.
Hutton and Owais Shah ensured their team reached lunch on 91 for one. When Shah was out for 12, his replacement, Ed Joyce, reached 39 from 53 balls with Jamie Dalrymple in support on four.
The match continues until Saturday.
n A Middlesex 2nd XI featuring Islington’s Billy Godleman began their championship quest with a draw against Marylebone Cricket Club Young Cricketers at Radlett. Opener Godleman scored one and 15 as Middlesex recorded 298 and 193-3 responding to Marylebone’s first innings of 201.
