Tube woes
set to escalate
Company which supplies spare parts for escalators goes into receivership
PASSENGERS travelling from Kentish Town Tube will have to
struggle down the stairs until at least July after it was revealed
the company which supplies escalator parts has gone bust.
Engineering company Tinsley Milcutt has gone into receivership,
leaving Underground maintenance company Tube Lines struggling
to find vital parts to repair a broken escalator, the New Journal
has learned.
As engineers embark on a summer of works and closures on the
Northern Line, frustrated travellers are asking how long they
will have to wait.
Disgruntled disabled passengers and parents with pushchairs
have been struggling to reach the platform following the breakdown
in January. But chiefs at Transport for London (TfL), who are
in charge of the Tube, say good news is on the horizon, promising
repairs by July.
A TfL spokeswoman has admitted they are still searching for
the vital parts needed for the repair, adding: “Work is
underway but is reliant on the delivery of some key parts. Unfortunately,
Tube Lines, which maintains the escalators on the Jubilee, Northern
and Piccadilly lines, is having difficulty procuring the parts
and hence the repairs have been delayed.
“Tube Lines is doing all they can to progress the works
and we now have a programme we hope will rectify the problem.
At this stage July is the predicted return to service date.
We will continue to monitor the situation and keep people informed
accordingly.”
The Northern Line has been plagued by faults and delays, the
most recent being the closure of the Charing Cross branch between
Camden Town and Kennington for the next 10 consecutive weekends
for engineering work.
There will also be closures for 11 weekends between Camden Town
and East Finchley from Saturday, July 15, for two weekends from
October 14 and between High Barnet and Finchley Central for
two weekends from September 30.
The closures are part of a £10bn investment programme
into the Tube. |
