Gunner Girls are champs

ARSENAL Ladies retained the Premier League championship title on Thursday with a 2-0 win over rivals Charlton.
Kelly Smith and Rachel Yankey’s goals made it a hat-trick of titles on the spin for Arsenal in a nervy match at Boreham Wood FC.
Emma Byrne saved a penalty and pulled off two vital second half saves as Arsenal overturned the Addicks in front of around 400 fans.
Smith put Arsenal ahead on 17 minutes but keeper Pauline Cope pulled off a string of saves to keep Charlton in the game.
Byrne’s heroics in goal in the final 15 minutes gave Arsenal the edge though and former Hampstead School pupil Yankey finished it three minutes from time.
During almost 20 years as manager, Vic Akers has now overseen his side to eight titles and says he expects to continue again next season.
He said: “This is a love for me and it’s in my blood.”
Arsenal ended the season on Sunday with a 5-3 win away to Doncaster Rovers Belles and will bid for the double on May 1 when they take on Leeds in the FA Cup final at Millwall.
Kick off is 1pm, tickets are £3 adults, £1 concessions, call ticket hotline on 020 7231 9999.
