Campbell could play in last Highbury derby
Wenger keen to rotate players in battle
for fourth place
ARSENAL defender Sol Campbell could be in line for a dramatic
return to action against fiercest rivals Tottenham in Saturday’s
do-or-die north London derby.
The giant defender, who spent 10 years with Spurs before defecting
to Arsenal, is hoping to recover from a broken nose in time
for the big match.
Highbury boss Arsene Wenger is desperate to rotate his players
in a congested final three weeks of the season in which he is
aiming to claim a top four Premiership finish and lead the Gunners
into next month’s Champions League final.
If Arsenal win all of their remaining league fixtures, they
will leapfrog Spurs and qualify for next season’s Champions
League.
But, crucially, those matches include the last-ever north London
derby to be staged at Highbury.
Should Tottenham win or even claim a draw then they will almost
certainly qualify for the Champions League.
Wenger said: “We will have to see how we recover from the
Champions League match (last night’s semi-final clash with
Real Villarreal).
“We will see whether we can bring Sol back. He could play
against Tottenham. At the back, I have not many rotation possibilities.”
The Arsenal boss has rotated his players against Manchester
United and Portsmouth only to see points dropped.
He insists that he has no regrets but Arsenal now have to win
every match.
He said: “We know we don’t play every day in the semi-finals
of the Champions League but we have to try to win every match.
We want to be professional and play our game.”
Tottenham haven’t won at Highbury since 1993 and Spurs
manager Martin Jol said: “In an ideal world, we would have
opened up a bigger gap between us and Arsenal. But we will be
going into the game feeling positive.” |
