'Healthy eating' plea to hospital

THE identity of cafés and restaurants bidding for outlets at a new food court at Whittington Hospital in Archway is being kept under wraps.
Health campaigners fear the outlets at the new N19 food court could be snapped up by multi-national catering companies which can afford high rents, instead of independent shops offering healthy food at affordable prices.
Geetie Singh, a member of London Mayor Ken Livingstone’s food committee, called on management at the hospital to make public the names of outlets they are currently negotiating with so the process of selection is truly democratic.
She said: “Management should go public with this food scheme as quickly as possible so everyone has an input. There is a great danger the contract is bought up by a major food company and then things deteriorate.”
A spokeswoman for the hospital said the staff and public restaurant will be run by the hospital catering department.
There will also be a delicatessen, which will sell sandwiches and hot and cold drinks, and a coffee bar. It is not yet known who will run these outlets. It is anticipated there will be seating for 320 customers, to be shared by the three outlets.
