Labour values public service

Each week in the run-up to the May 4 council elections the New Journal is offering parties a platform to put their case to voters. This week: Raj Chada (pictured) of Labour.

LABOUR has ensured Camden citizens are provided with some of the best services in London.
That is why we have invested extra money to make our residents safer, with street wardens and patrols and using all the new legislation. That is why we are regarded as the greenest council in London, with recycling rates nearly twice those of our neighbours. It is why we have the second cleanest streets in London. It is why we have the best schools in inner London.
It is why we have a better council housing service than in Islington and Westminster, and it is why we fund voluntary sector organisations more than any other borough in London – all of this with low council tax rises for the last three years and inflation-only rises guaranteed to 2008.
There is more to do. As a new council leader, I will ensure we move forward. We will have extra street warden patrols with more CCTV. We will have more school places with a massive refurbishment of our schools. We will expand our youth and leisure services – with free swimming for under-16s and over-60s. We will invest in council housing.
Politics is about choice. My choice is clear against the Tories, who privatise by principle and divert money from those who need it, and against Lib Dem opportunism. To different audiences they will say whatever you want to hear (apart from tough decisions that will actually fight crime or tackle inequality).
My choice is for a progressive party with Labour values of public service, prepared to stand up for its residents, prepared to fight central government, Thames Water, the Royal Free Hospital or whoever else to get the best deal for residents.
If residents share my vision, if they value this, they have to get out and vote Labour.
