Rider dies at High Street black spot
A YOUNG man was killed at a Camden Town accident black spot
over Easter weekend.
Andrew Herron, 31, was killed as he rode his scooter over the
crossing between Camden High Street and Delancey Street on Saturday.
Just hours earlier a homeless man was killed by a bus outside
the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead shortly after leaving the
accident and emergency department.
Florist John Atkins, who saw the bus accident in Pond Street
on Friday, said: “Even the best driver in the world”
would not have been able to avoid hitting the man. The driver
was not doing more than four miles an hour.”
The driver of the No 46 bus was in shock but returned to work
at the weekend.
Mr Atkins added: “He walked out straight in front of the
bus. He wasn’t looking at the traffic at all.”
It is believed the victim lived in a homeless hostel and police
have not yet found his family.
Mr Herron, of Haslemere Road, Crouch End, was hit in Camden
Town. He died at the Royal Free Hospital on Monday after his
Vespa crashed with a Volvo.
Police arrested the car driver – a man in his forties –
on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Early Easter Saturday shopping was brought to a halt as officers
closed off roads surrounding the wreckage for most of the morning.
Shop staff say they see near-misses at the spot almost daily.
A member of the staff at the Jolly Baker in Camden High Street
said: “It’s a terrible corner.”
Another witness, who was woken up by the smash, said: “Vehicles
turn into Delancey Street and don’t often signal. I saw
one guy almost get killed by a truck there last year.”
A post mortem on Mr Herron’s death was held at St Pancras
Coroner’s Court on Tuesday. |
