Letters to the Editor

Homes for families is what really counts

In your correspondence Mr Rossan’s comments on the Winchester Road development, while he admits to no political affiliation, he also demonstrates a total ignorance of the scale of the housing needs crisis in Camden, indeed in inner London generally (Same old flat tale from Dave, April 13).
What was missing regarding the Winchester Road project was the fact that it includes at least seven four-bedroom or more socially affordable properties, three of them five-bedroom houses.
Most years, Camden is able to secure very few new tenancies of more than four bedrooms, barely reaching double figures; while many families live for years in desperately overcrowded accommodation.
I know of one family with five children and a disabled grandparent in a one-bedroom flat.
Admittedly, this is in a neighbouring, Liberal-controlled borough, so there is even less hope, but there are parallels in Camden.
While Winchester Road is only scratching the surface, it was worth supporting the application for this reason alone, despite the synthetic outrage opportunistically generated by local Tories; the Liberals, yet again, were absent from the meeting.
Further, in respect of the previous Swiss Cottage development, I very much doubt if the 42 families given new, public-sector homes will share Mr Rossan’s resentment over this achievement, for which Labour Camden can be proud.
