20mph borough-wide ban first in country

ISLINGTON has become the first borough in the country to introduce a 20mph limit on all its residential roads.
The council’s east area planning committee supported the pioneering move on Tuesday following similar decisions early this year in the north, west and south of the borough.
But 30mph limits will remain on main through routes, under the control of Transport for London.
Green councillor Katie Dawson, who first proposed the move, with support from Labour and the ruling Lib Dems, said: “Other authorities have trialled 20mph and Portsmouth got close. But Islington is the first to introduce a proper borough-wide scheme. It should mean a major reduction in road accidents and make the borough a nicer, not to mention a calmer and friendlier place to live in.”
The biggest problem will be enforcing 20mph limits as police admit they do not have the resources to patrol every side street. Lib Dem environment chief Councillor Greg Foxsmith said: “I’m sure every pedestrian, not to mention every parent of young children, will recognise this as an important step.”
