Man jailed for killing girlfriend and dumping her body
A MAN who dismembered his Swedish girlfriend in her Angel home before dumping her body in a suitcase on a motorway was convicted of murder on Tuesday.
Jamal Bakhit, 25, was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 20 years, at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
He admitted murdering Rahmona Ahmedin, 23, in her home in Peabody Square in June 2008.
In a statement read out in court, Ms Ahmedin’s family said the senseless murder had “deprived a loving mother, father, sisters and brothers of the happy life we shared together”.
A murder investigation was launched after a lorry driver found a suitcase on fire in a layby in Cambridgeshire on June 18 last year. It contained parts of the body of Ms Ahmedin, also known as “Rahma”, who had been reported missing by Bakhit 12 days earlier. He told police she had left her home for a day trip to Bristol but had not returned.
Bakhit had travelled north in his Volkswagen Golf dumping her body parts in a series of suitcases on the M11.
A post mortem examination found the cause of death was a stab wound to the chest.
Investigating officer DCI Phil Rickells, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command [HSCC], said: “This was a horrific act of violence committed against a young woman.
“During the course of the investigation, Jamal Bakhit has never disclosed to police why he stabbed Rahmona, dismembered her body and later disposed of her remains close to the M11 motorway.” |
