Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 November 2009

Put bikes on register

• AS a former cyclist I am happy that there are more bikes on the road, although some break the law, rush lights, go up one-way streets the wrong way or, usually young, use the pavement regularly.
As a disabled person with balance problems, I find cyclists on the pavement, often travelling at speed, are a threat to health.
I lived in Jersey in my youth and all bikes had to be registered and had to display a number in a small bracket. Not to do so was an offence. To register every bike reduces the number of bikes being stolen or used by dealers to distribute drugs. In some boroughs the number of stolen bikes on our roads is as high as 80 per cent.
Cyclists have to obey the Highway Code, and maybe we need to legislate for them to be registered and insured. They are road users after all?
