Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 November 2009

Skips failed green test

• THE Labour council candidates for St George’s ward were simply wrong in their letter (Fly-tipping keeps rising, November 13). Fly-tipping hasn’t doubled over the last three years – in fact, it’s dropped slightly.
There has been a recent spate of fly-tipping involving tyres, however.
I would urge all members of the public to report fly-tipping if you see it. Once a fly-tip is reported to the council, it now usually takes just a day to be cleaned up.
Council-provided skips are something Labour has been on about since the 1970s. But the skip service isn’t environmentally-friendly. Anything left in a skip is difficult to sort for recycling, and is usually too contaminated or broken to re-use. It goes straight to landfill – not only an environmental disaster, but costing landfill taxes. With the council’s bulky waste collection, we recycle everything we can. And decent furniture is given to the Homestore charity for re-use, helping low-income families get access to affordable furniture.
We have had fewer than a handful of requests for the return of council skips. The council offers everyone free collection of 25 bulky items every year. Residents tell us they prefer the free, personalised service.
Cllr Greg Foxsmith
Lib Dem executive member for the environment
