Back to 84!
Time capsule discovered

A TIME capsule hidden in a cupboard at a Finsbury Park church has been discovered after 25 years.
Political activist and former Catholic priest Bruce Kent found the box – packed and locked in 1984 with a hand-written note stuck to the lid warning “do not open until 2009” – during a clearout at St Mellitus Church in Tollington Park.
Inside are old newsletters, wooden crosses with names of parish members, a note-book with blessings from the congregation – and a £1 note concealed in an envelope.
“It makes me very emotional,” said Mary Brennan, a parish member since 1977. “Many people have died since then. Nowadays women play a more active role in the church and help during the service – they weren’t allowed to do that at that time.”
A committee has been formed to place a new time capsule in the church in December – not to be opened until 2034.
