It’s no joke – Message to pupils from parents of knife victim Ben

THE parents of murdered teenager Ben Kinsella visited an Islington community centre yesterday (Thursday) to speak to schoolchildren about the deadly effects of knife crime.
Debbie and George Kinsella joined Year 6 pupils at Robert Blair Primary School for a performance of an anti-knife crime play, It’s No Joke, staged by theatre group The Comedy School.
After the performance at Nailor Hall Community Centre, George Kinsella spoke to children about the dangers associated with knives and urged them to think twice before carrying them.
He said: “We enjoyed the play, which was very funny, but don’t forget the serious message behind it, which is that carrying a knife is no joke. We hope young people in Islington will continue saying no to knife crime.”
Speaking after the play, he said: “It’s been a real roller-coaster for us over the last 18 months but the decision this week by Jack Straw to raise the minimum prison sentence for knife murder to 25 years is a definite high point. We think this will act as a deterrent to anyone thinking of using a knife.”
Debbie added: “Today’s performance was excellent. The children were really engaged and well behaved, and it was great seeing them asking so many questions afterwards. It seemed like the message hit home.”
The couple were presented with a cheque for £1,000 by Southern Electric for the Ben Kinsella Trust. The event was organised by Islington Council and sponsored by roads contractor FM Conway.
