Team effort against racism
IT was a football extravaganza in Market Road when 16 teams of young people battled it out on the pitches.
The Kick Islamophobia football tournament – under the banner “one community, one goal” – brought the borough’s youths together to raise awareness of anti-Muslim racism.
The event was organised by young people from Islington and Listen Up’s Young Muslim Voices Project.
Sergeant Graham Henry from Barnsbury Safer Neighbourhoods team said: “Kick Islamophobia is going from strength to strength every year.
“It is an excellent opportunity for us to get to know the views and concerns of both young people and the Islamic community.”
PCSO Vennis Stewart said: “What a fantastic event. It brought together a multitude of religious groups whose paths wouldn’t normally cross. Barnsbury SNT was there to breakdown barriers with the young people, to give information and dispel the myths around police procedures such as stop and search.” |
