Former nurse politician receives OBE honour

FORMER nurse turned Islington politician Jennette Arnold this week received an OBE from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace for services to Local Government and London.
After a career in nursing, including senior roles with the Royal College of Nursing, Ms Arnold found her natural home as a campaigner within political and public life.
In 2007 and 2008 she was named as one of Britain’s 50 most influential black women.
A councillor in Islington for eight years, including a term as deputy mayor, she was elected to the Greater London Authority as an Assembly Member in 2000. Since 2004 she has represented North East London and in 2008/09 served a term as chairwoman of the London Assembly.
As chairwoman of the London Health Commission she campaigned successfully for a smoke-free London.
Through her involvement with the Metropolitan Police Authority Ms Arnold has successfully overseen the establishment of Community Safety Boards in her constituency. She has been an active supporter of the Justice4Jamie campaign highlighting the devastating effects of knife crime, and has supported BLUNT 1 and 2 policing initiatives to tackle the problem London-wide.
Ms Arnold chaired the Cultural Strategy Group for London, which contained former Mayor Ken Livingstone’s pledge to bring the 2012 Olympics to London and she has worked to ensure Londoners feel the benefit of the Olympic legacy. As a member of the transport committee on London’s Assembly Ms Arnold has been campaigning for improved accessibility across London’s transport network.
