Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 November 2009

Pensions scandal

• IT is a national scandal that the state pension is worth just 16 per cent of national average wages. Millions of elderly continue to struggle in hardship and poverty through no fault of their own.
Pensioners need to know if politicians and political parties are prepared to do more than spout meaningless rhetoric.
What we need are politicians with the guts to ensure their manifestos include a plan of action to achieve a fair and just state pension.
Islington Pensioner Forum at our well-attended annual meeting passed a resolution demanding a basic state pension set above the official poverty level (currently estimated as £165 a week) which is linked to earnings or prices and paid alongside all other existing concessions.
John Worker
Secretary, Islington Pensioners Forum
