A time to remember
• I SHOULD like as many people as possible to join me for the Remembrance Sunday parade and inter-faith service at the War Memorial on Islington Green. The service begins at 10.40am on Sunday and the two-minute silence will be observed at 11am. Afterwards, at 11.40am, there will be a short service at the war memorial at Spa Green.
Since 1921, the Royal British Legion’s mission has been to help those members of the serving and ex-service community who needed it. Eighty-six years on and the Legion continues to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or who have served in the Armed Forces.
This year’s Poppy Appeal provides the main source of funds to maintain the Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes in which more than 300,000 people are helped each year.
May I urge readers to buy a poppy. They are on sale at the town hall and 222 Upper Street.

• ON behalf of Islington Veterans Association (IVA), we would like to invite all ex-service men and women (regular, TA or national service), widows, widowers, spouses, sons, daughters, granddaughters and sons to join us this Sunday, Remembrance Sunday.
We assemble at 9.30am at Highbury Corner for the parade to Islington Green for the service of remembrance and two-minute silence.
This is followed by a solemn wreath-laying and march past in the presence of the Mayor of Islington and Deputy Lieutenant of Islington.
This is a day for medals to be worn. Widows and widowers wear medals on the left side at a slight angle. Daughters, sons and grandsons and daughters wear medals on the right side. Miniatures may be worn along with berets, caps, tam o’shanters and other regimental headwear.
Do join us, especially to honour the young women and men who have given their lives and been wounded and disabled recently. The IVA is a growing group and warmly welcomes all who wish to join us. Whether people have been in the services or associated with them or not, support is the important thing.
There will be people there to welcome you, and tell you where and when we meet each month.
