Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 November 2009

Picking on bus users

• MAYOR Boris Johnson’s bus and Tube fare rises are a massive blow to already hard-pressed Londoners, who will rightly wonder why he can apparently find £5billion of Transport for London savings but can’t keep fares down.
Bus users are being hit hardest with fare rises of up to 20 per cent. Many Londoners who are least well off use the buses and will end up paying for the freezing of Travelcards owned by those who can afford them.
Rather than increasing fares, the mayor should reconsider throwing money away on scrapping the western congestion charge extension, replacing bendy buses such as the 38 and designing a new, attractive but totally unnecessary Routemaster.
Jennette Arnold
Labour London Assembly member, Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest
