Award for gardens that (some) neighbours hated
A CONTROVERSIAL £100,000 landscaping scheme for Duncan Terrace Gardens at Angel has won a prestigious award from conservationists the Islington Society.
Islington Council, which commissioned the scheme despite criticism by a group of neighbours, was praised by the society at its annual awards this week.
The society’s vice-president, former architect Harley Sherlock, said it normally presented awards to buildings that have enhanced the borough’s environment. “It’s not often we are able to congratulate the council, but Duncan Terrace Gardens is very good,” he added.
“They have strengthened the planting and put in new bushes and trees, and new winding paths, which are sympathetic to what is already there.
“There’s a nice new mini-green lawn and well-designed benches.
“We were set up to keep the council in order and stop them messing about with our borough and here we are giving them a prize.”
Last year, a group of residents in Colebrook Row complained about loss of trees, bushes and shrubs and described the scheme as “boring and cosmetic”.
However, residents across the way in Duncan Terrace were generally pleased with the landscaping, which allows more light and improved security. Bushes have been taken out to stop people using them as toilets.
Mr Sherlock continues to be critical of plans to build two tower blocks at City Road Basin, a scheme involving the council, British Waterways and developers. |
