Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 October 2009

Does this death toll mean it’s time cyclists sat tests?

• I AM angry and frustrated by the continuing deaths of cyclists on our roads (Campaigners’ fury as blindspot is blamed for death of cyclist, October 23). Cyclists continue to die on the inside of large lorries. Why?
There is no contest between several tonnes of metal and a person. As a cyclist, whenever I see a lorry I back off but plenty of cyclists carry on and put their lives at risk.
These are not poorly road educated, once-a-year cyclists but regular and often commuting cyclists.
The authorities can put in signs, mirrors and alarms but cyclists need education to be safer on our roads.
Currently, cyclists are the only road users who do not pass a test before getting on the public highway and maybe this should change.
Properly trained and educated cyclists will not make bad decisions and this includes a variety of road situations, not just approaching lorries on the inside.
I believe drivers need to be aware of cyclists and drive appropriately but as we expect drivers to make sensible decisions on our roads so as cyclists we need to take responsibility for our actions. I believe devices attached to lorries will save cyclists’ lives but far more lives will be saved by cyclists making sensible decisions while using our roads.
