Residents and businesses given final opportunity to view £16m plan for historic Turkish baths

TOMORROW is the last chance to help shape the £16 million refurbishment of the historic Ironmonger Row Baths interior.
Residents and businesses have one final opportunity to polish the vision for the baths drawn up by Tim Ronalds Architects at Finsbury Leisure Centre tomorrow (Saturday) between 1pm and 4pm.
The Turkish Baths, pool and gym complex is being given its makeover in time for the 2012 Olympics.
The new plans propose to restore historic features from the Grade II-listed building.
Both the main and training pools will be completely renovated, and new plumbing, more efficient heating and ventilation will be installed.
The gym will be replaced with a bigger 60-station facility, and two new exercise studios will be added for fitness classes.
Full planning proposals have been drawn up and residents are being invited to give their views.
The work is being funded with more than £12 million from Islington Council and £3.7 million from regeneration body EC1 New Deal for Communities (NDC).
Town Hall leisure chief councillor Ruth Polling said: “Ironmonger Row Baths has been at the heart of the EC1 community since it opened in 1931 and is loved by local residents. We consulted residents in 2007 to ask what they wanted from the refurbishment, and these fantastic plans reflect what we were told.
“I hope residents will let us know what they think of the plans and continue to work with us to make them happen.”
EC1 NDC chief executive Kirby Swales said: “The NDC’s investment is all about ensuring residents here have top-quality leisure facilities. These bold new designs will inspire more local people to use the baths when they re-open.”
Residents and businesses can register views online by completing a form at www.islington.gov.uk/irb
A planning application will be submitted to Islington Council on November 10.

I HAVE not seen anything in the plans for the replacement of the sauna. This is the facility I am most interested in. I know I am not alone in this as they are often very crowded across the borough.
