Final insult to The Mall
• THE Mall in Camden Passage is about to stripped of its name as well as its dignity. New occupiers have applied for permission to remove the signage facing Upper Street which reads “The Mall”, and replace it with signage advertising the new tenants.
Although I normally sit on the planning committee which would determine this application, I feel so strongly about this final blow to the identity of The Mall that I have publicly objected, and will be speaking from the floor as an objector when it comes to committee. My objection reads: “I object to the proposed signage to the west elevation. The current signage reads ‘The Mall’. The building is known as ‘The Mall’, and is listed by English Heritage as ‘The Mall’.
“The existing signage should be retained as a historical record of the retail use which brought the building back into use and contributed so much to the regeneration of the area as an antiques market.”
