All-conquering: Conkers contestants relive childhood
ONCE a popular playground sport, it’s been banned in our risk-averse schools in case of child injury.
But conkers is being played today (Friday) in Clerkenwell in defiance of health and safety rules. Eight teams of three players will take part in the first ConkerFest tournament at St James’s Church between noon and 3pm.
The organiser, design firm Zard Creative, is expecting dozens more players, nostalgic for their childhood, to turn up. Zard director Perry Rendell said: “We all loved playing conkers when we were kids so we decided to keep the tradition alive.”
Co-director Mick Stacey said: “It’s sad that you don’t seem to be allowed to play conkers in school anymore. Everyone is risk averse these days.”
Each participant will be given a conker collected on the ground from local horse chestnut trees. Entry fee per team is £5. Proceeds are being donated to the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign, which funds research into the disease. |
