Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 9 October 2009

Fewer signs up ahead

• IT'S good to see, as ever, that Tim Newark, of Islington TaxPayers’ Alliance, hasn’t let facts or logic get in the way of a good rant (Ugly signs ruin streets, October 2). His assertion that a borough-wide 20mph speed limit will result in hundreds of extra road signs is just another part of his scaremongering attempts to derail a plan which will help redress the imbalance between cars and all other road users, will make Islington a more civilised place to live in, and will reduce injuries and save lives.
The reason so many road signs are needed for 20mph zones at the moment is that the council’s piecemeal approach means some roads have 20mph limits, some have 30mph limits and some change halfway. Drivers have to be told when this changes, and then reminded again later.
But once we’ve got a borough-wide limit, life will be much simpler. You’ll always be in the zone. Which means we’ll need fewer signs, not more.
