Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 9 October 2009

Let cyclists share road

• Islington Cyclists’ Action Group (ICAG) is concerned about the installation of humps to deter cyclists from using Douglas Road South at the edge of the Marquess estate.
ICAG acknowledges some cyclists used this path without giving due consideration to residents. However, we believe the humps are an overreaction and have discouraged cycling, intentionally or not, rather than simply taming it. The council could have used more cost-effective measures such as cycle lanes and less dramatic humps to move cyclists to the far side of the path, away from front gates.
Cycling is becoming more popular in London, especially in Islington. But existing and potential cyclists yearn to use quieter routes away from fast-moving traffic, like the route along the New River that includes Douglas Road South.
Residents of Douglas Road South are fortunate to live on one of the few car-free roads in Islington. Is sharing that road with repentant cyclists too much to ask? ICAG would be happy to work with residents to resolve this issue to all our benefits.
