‘Rare gem’ Nurse reaches national final

AN Islington mental health nurse – described by a patient as “one of the kindest people I have ever known” – has reached the final of a prestigious health care competition.
Acosia Opoku is one of five finalists in the nationwide Patient’s Choice Award, organised by Nursing Standard magazine.
Acosia, who is employed by Islington and Camden NHS Foundation Trust, was nominated by three patients, including Bamidele Esuola.
In her testimony, Ms Esuola said: “Acosia has been the kindest person I have ever known and the best care co-ordinator that I have ever had.
“She helped me, she persevered with me and stood by me, despite all the challenges that I posed.
“I have completed a university programme and various life skills, thanks to Acosia. She is a rare gem of a nurse and I believe that she deserves to be recognised.”
The finalists were shortlisted from more than 250 nominations by an expert panel of judges.
Speaking on behalf of the panel, Nursing Standard editor-in-chief Jean Gray said: “Reading the testimonies has been a moving experience, demonstrating the real difference that nurses are making every day in their patients’ lives.
“Once again, the calibre of the entries has made selecting our shortlist a very difficult task. Now it’s over to members of the public to have their say – and choose our ultimate winner.”
Voting closes on October 29. The winner will be announced at Nursing Standard’s Nurse Awards 2009 ceremony at The Dorchester Hotel in London on November 9.

I perfectly agree with what the norminees are saying as Acosia is patient with her clients, hard working and persevering. I had the opportunity to do a days round with her when I was training. Although Acosia was highly pregnant but that did not change her attitude towards work. Good Luck xxx
