While the car’s away... The people will chat, snooze and play

A BUSY main road at Angel was cleared of traffic and transformed into a quiet grassy oasis by Islington Council to help celebrate Car Free Day on Saturday.
Residents took the chance to stretch out, chat, play, read, snooze and relax on the grassed-over section of Liverpool Road, behind the N1 Centre.
Live music was on offer from performers including David Osborne – who turned his bike into a drum kit – rock band Bonelli, Irish music band Give Me Your Hand and community choir The Angels of Kaos.
An acrobat, face painters and paper-flower makers helped entertain the crowds while stalls offered information on walking, cycling, and the advantages of not using cars.
Leader of Islington Council, Councillor Terry Stacy, opened the celebrations and said: “Car Free Day is a rare chance to relax in a usually busy street
without cars.
“We’re committed to green travel in Islington – whether it’s more bike stands or better pavements for pedestrians – and this was a fun afternoon for many people.”
Up to 2,000 people are estimated to have visited the Car-Free zone, for varying lengths of time.
