Hidden histories revealed

BLACK History Month kicks off with an afternoon of fun tomorrow (Saturday).
Guest speakers will talk about how their Islington beginnings have influenced their lives, at the event at St Mary Magdalene Academy in Holloway. For children, a play area will feature arts and crafts and penalty shoot-out games.
A dozen activities are planned for October, including film screenings, puppet shows, oral history projects and appearances by author Bonnie Greer, playwright Winsome Pinnock, mathematician Mr Numbervator and co-founder of The Voice newspaper, Alex Pascall.
Exploring the theme of “Hidden Histories”, events will highlight the achievements of African and African-Caribbean people. Students will have the chance of the study trip of a lifetime to Washington DC, with places for a pupil from each Islington secondary school.
The opening event is at 1pm on Saturday at St Mary Magdalene Academy in Liverpool Road.
