War heroes to be fast-tracked for housing
WAR heroes who were injured or disabled in the line of duty are being fast-tracked for council housing in Islington, under new plans by Islington Council.
Seriously injured or disabled veterans will be given additional points to bid for housing under the borough’s council letting scheme – on top of any they receive because of their disability, homelessness, or other needs.
Lib Dem council leader Terry Stacy said: “It doesn’t matter what you think of the wars, soldiers who have been injured in the line of duty deserve support from the community.
“We ask for the ultimate sacrifice from our servicemen and women, so I believe that we’re morally obliged to do all we can to help people who are hurt fighting on our
behalf.
“The government’s treatment of the soldiers who served our country has been a national shame in so many ways, but local councils can go some way towards putting that right.”
From October, servicemen and women injured in wars will be warded an extra 90 housing points – on top of 100 points they will already be getting for their disability.
Veterans have welcomed the move, which comes about after the government instructed councils to fast track disabled, servicemen and women.
Developers in Islington will have to provide at least 50 per cent affordable housing and meet strict new targets on energy efficiency. The new demands were put forward this week by the Lib Dems in a document that will set the scene for the borough over the next 15 years. |
