Bath time! Architects chosen for £16m renovation at historic pool
AN award-winning architect has clinched the contract for the £16million refurbishment of Finsbury’s historic Ironmonger Row Baths.
Tim Ronalds Architects, based in Nile Street, off City Road, Finsbury, was one of five firms shortlisted. The grade II-listed art deco building, built in 1931, is thought to have one of London’s oldest Turkish baths. The baths plans include improvements to the 30-metre swimming pool and a new café.
They will go out to public consultation in October.
The refit is the only one of Islington Council’s planned leisure redevelopments to survive the recession. Plans to demolish and replace the Sobell Centre in Holloway were shelved.
The council said it was impressed by Tim Ronalds Architects’ transformation of Hackney Empire.
The refurbishment will modernise the pool, Turkish baths and sauna.
The baths will close from next May for 18 months. |
