Boris plans cycle revolution, but not in his road
MAYOR of London Boris Johnson has lost his bid to put cycle docking bays in his own street.
Mr Johnson’s plan to follow Paris by creating a London-wide network of bikes for hire close to public transport has come unstuck in Islington, where eight docking station sites have been rejected by Town Hall planners. On Tuesday the council’s south area planning committee threw out plans to site 35 bays in Colebrook Row – where Mr Johnson lives – because the proposed position was too dangerous.
Eric Sorensen, chairman of the Angel Association, said: “The footpath is remarkably narrow. It’s a phenomenally dangerous position.” He has suggested putting the bays in Goswell Road triangle or at the other end of Colebrook Row.
Transport for London’s Gabrielle Coyle said: “There’s quite a cluster of refusals in the Angel area. We consider it a good site.”
A spokesman for Mr Johnson said: “The Mayor is disappointed to hear that potential cyclists in his neighbourhood who may wish to take part in the capital’s cycle revolution might have to walk a little further to find a docking station.” |
