In market for votes
• YVETTE Pathare wants to become a councillor (Antiques market fight a polls issue, August 7).
The way that the Labour government bulldozed through local opposition to the redevelopment of the antiques market at Camden Passage is certainly enough to motivate someone to take a stand.
But she may find it more difficult than she thinks to fight the government.
Ironically, Ms Pathare’s decision to campaign for the Conservatives risks splitting the vote.
St Peter’s ward is a straight fight between Labour and Lib Dems.
The Liberal Democrat council, alongside hundreds of local people, fought hard to save the Mall.
A petition against closing down the small traders was signed by 600 people; 300 people made formal objections to the planning committee.
The planning committee threw out the developer’s application. But a bureaucrat appointed by the Labour government overruled the council.
The Tories came fourth in St Peter’s ward in the last elections in June. If residents there want to show their anger at the Labour government, the Liberal Democrats are the only choice to beat Labour.
