Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 4 September 2009

We need our parks

• I HAVE just got back from holiday so am catching up on my back copies of your wonderful newspaper. You can imagine not only my total surprise but utter horror at your report of plans by Labour councillor Catherine West to turn part of Highbury Fields into a possible travellers site.
What has come over her? She said: “No green space should be ruled out.” Sorry, Ms West, yes, it should.
Every one of our parks and open spaces should be ruled out, Islington being one of the smallest, if not the smallest, boroughs in London, with so little open space.
None of it should be given up. The council should be creating more, for everyone. If the council needs to provide these facilities, let it do it on other land, not on our parks, which may I say are getting the long overdue investment they should have had years ago.
It was Mark Twain who said “it is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt”. Take note.
