Public help foil pawn shop window raid
THIEVES who tried to smash their way into a Finsbury Park pawn shop last Friday were stopped in their tracks by a group of undercover cops and surrounded by passers-by.
Early morning eyewitnesses saw two would-be burglars arrive by motorbike, and while one stayed on the bike, a second began smashing the window of H&T Pawnbrokers in Seven Sisters Road.
Within seconds, three undercover police officers came running from the corner of Blackstock Road, grabbing the two men and holding them down.
Members of the public helped surround the suspects, who were quickly restrained.
While the motorbike was later taken away, forensics officers spent the afternoon examining the scene, where the hammer lay on the pavement surrounded by shattered glass.
Behind the glass window was an array of gold jewellery but, early reports suggest nothing was stolen.
Abdel Yaqubi, who works in the neighbouring fish store, ran out to help.
He said: “One smashed the window with a hammer and tried to take the gold. Three undercover police officers arrested them so quickly.” |
